"Every town has its own unique history worth telling. This is the basis behind the book "Roots and Wings: Memories and Stories of New Vienna." In 1995, the town celebrated its sesquicentennial. After this historic turning point, the New Vienna Historical Society, decided it should do something to preserve the town's history. Kay Westhoff, secretary of the historical society, said the book committee "wrote this book to preserve their memories and partially explain who the people in New Vienna are by telling where we came from by sharing experiences along the path of life." In 2004, historical society members started collecting memories, stories, photos, old letters, diaries and calendars from various people who either live or used to live in New Vienna. They asked people to submit their stories.
